Revolution Wind receives final approval

Revolution Wind has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its Construction and Operations Plan (COP) by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). This final green light propels the project toward the commencement of offshore construction.

Revolution Wind, the inaugural utility-scale offshore wind farm serving Rhode Island and Connecticut, is set to deliver 400 megawatts of clean power to Rhode Island and 304 megawatts to Connecticut. This energy will supply more than 350,000 homes in the two states, playing a pivotal role in achieving their ambitious climate objectives.

The project is poised to generate numerous direct, indirect, and induced job opportunities, alongside permanent operations and maintenance roles across both states. Approximately 100 local union workers are already engaged in the onshore transmission system construction for the project.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Revolution Wind marks a pivotal step toward advancing our state’s clean energy future, contributing significantly to Rhode Island's 100% renewable energy standard by 2033. We eagerly anticipate the offshore construction and installation activity slated to commence in 2024.”

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of wind power in the state’s clean energy strategy and its role in providing clean, reliable, and affordable power to families and businesses.

The project’s onshore construction activities are well underway, with offshore construction set to intensify in 2024. Revolution Wind is anticipated to become operational by 2025.

David Hardy, Group EVP and CEO Americas at Ørsted, expressed gratitude, acknowledging the Biden Administration and state partners for their commitment. He emphasized the project’s contributions to the climate goals of Rhode Island and Connecticut, underlining its creation of high-paying local union jobs and bolstering investments in the U.S. supply chain.

The COP approval outlines essential provisions concerning turbine spacing, construction methodology in federal waters, and measures for marine habitat and species protection. These measures were devised in collaboration with various external organizations and experts, ensuring a harmonious relationship with stakeholders and promoting coexistence.

Several political figures and industry stakeholders lauded the project’s final approval, acknowledging its impact on job creation, energy independence, and environmental benefits. Their remarks affirmed the project’s significance in advancing clean energy goals and fostering sustainable economic growth in the region.
