Last week, the Egyptian government, represented by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), finalized a landmark agreement with Jan De Nul Group to commence the study for constructing an undersea export cable linking Egypt and Europe.

The agreement aligns with Egypt's steadfast commitment, reconfirmed late September, to establish an undersea electricity cable connecting Egyptian solar and wind installations with the broader European energy market.

The ambitious interconnector aims to transport over 2 GW of solar and wind power from Egypt to Europe through an approximately 1,000 kilometre long undersea power cable. By comparison, the current longest interconnector cable, between Denmark and Britain, spans 765 kilometres. Adding to the challenge, the cable track traverses water depths of up to 3,000 metres.

Jan De Nul Group will conduct a comprehensive financial and technical study, intending to actively contribute to the export project's development. The study encompasses project financing, green power production, installation and operation of transmission systems like cables, and seeking partnerships to integrate with existing grids in Europe.

Philippe Hutse, Director of Jan De Nul Offshore Energy, expressed enthusiasm: "We are thrilled about this agreement. Egypt acknowledges our expertise in installing extensive export cables both on and beneath the seabed. Our forthcoming next-generation cable installation vessel, the Fleeming Jenkin, designed precisely for projects of this nature—long distances and great depths—sets us apart in the cable installation market. Egypt's leadership in African energy transition aligns well with our commitment to support such initiatives."

The commencement of the project is slated for 2027.
