The construction of the THOR Offshore High Voltage Station (OHVS) project for RWE officially initiated at the end of November. The key milestone of the 'steel cutting' ceremony was marked at the HSM Offshore Energy yard in Schiedam, the Netherlands, where both the offshore substation and the jacket are being constructed.

HSM Offshore Energy, alongside key subcontractors Iv-Offshore & Energy and GE Renewable Energy, was awarded the contract for engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning of the offshore high voltage substation and its jacket foundation in 2022. The selection was based on HSM Offshore Energy’s extensive experience and technical expertise, aiming to develop a highly efficient design for RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm.

The open design of the substation, boasting a capacity of over 1,000 MW and an overall weight below 3000 MT, sets a new standard in the offshore wind market, offering the best AC power-to-weight ratio in history, states the company. This innovation reduces the use of structural steel and energy during manufacturing, with a focus on steel sourcing and fabrication within Europe.

THOR Offshore Wind Farm RWE is set to construct the THOR wind farm off the Danish west coast, approximately 22 kilometres from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland. To connect the wind farm to the Danish grid, RWE will establish two new substations - one at sea and one on land.

The sea-based substation will serve as the nerve centre of the wind farm, collecting electricity generated by individual wind turbines and transforming it to transmission-level voltage. The green electricity will then be transported via export cables to the onshore substation. THOR will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date, capable of supplying enough green electricity to power more than one million Danish households.
