As the year draws to a close, Andrew Elmes, Head of Business Development (Net Zero) - UK+I at Siemens Energy, reflects on significant advancements and signals a promising future, primarily focusing on the unveiling of 108-metre turbine blades, the largest ever manufactured in the UK, for Ocean Winds’ Moray West project.

Expressing sentiments following a pivotal interaction hosting a Treasury Minister at the project site, Elmes states, "This year has witnessed the lowest ebbs for our industry but concludes with pivotal signs for a positive future, both for our sector and its societal impact."

In response to shifting economic landscapes and expectations from CFD5, suppliers, notably Siemens Energy companies, urged a transformative year for 2023, subsequently witnessing substantial changes after the CFD5 setback.

Highlighting the global implications of COP28's historic outcomes, Elmes acknowledges the monumental shift away from fossil fuels and a tripled commitment to renewable deployment by the decade's end. The financial and investment signals resulting from this landmark agreement are deemed significant for the global clean energy transition.

Moreover, Elmes notes the UK government's recognition of market realities with increased auction prices for CFD6, reflecting an understanding of inflation and finance costs. Emphasizing the role of renewable technologies as the most cost-effective option for new energy investments, the figure underscores the need for flexibility aligned with market dynamics.
Looking ahead to 2024, predictions outline pivotal milestones, including a projected solar investment surpassing oil for the first time, global power sector emissions peaking, and renewables taking the lead in UK electricity provision, effectively bidding farewell to coal.
However, acknowledging challenges ahead, Elmes addresses the need for a robust CFD6, aligning government initiatives, sustainable investment, and industrial growth plans to maintain the UK's attractiveness in the offshore wind market.
